This presentation is hosted by the Northwestern University Alumni Association and is part of the association's Seattle events leading to the Northwestern vs. Washington football game on September 21.

Gus Hornsby and Evanston's Role in the Birth of American Football

Larry will present the final scheduled lecture for Gus Hornsby's Gamble this fall in Evanston, Illinois at the Evanston History Center's historic and beautiful Dawes House.
​
Previous lectures focused on the Northwestern University tie-ins to Hornsby's story and the links to early Chicago football. This final lecture will include both of those topics while featuring Evanston's history and the role of Frances Willard in the events that the book covers.

Larry read from Gus Hornsby's Gamble to a standing-room-only group at Hyde Brothers in Fort Wayne. Hyde Brothers, one of the Midwest's best used book stores, features local authors in a monthly forum called Last Thursday. For Larry, this was an opportunity to return to his hometown and discuss his latest book.
​
If you are in the Fort Wayne area and have not experienced Hyde Brothers, this is a great chance to become acquainted with one of the under-appreciated jewels of Indiana. Hyde Brothers is an example of bookstores as they once were: independent, eclectic, and full of unexpected treasures.

Luncheon and awards banquet to present 2024's Best of Illinois History Awards. Larry was unable to attend (he was at the 2024 A Day with Northwestern in Evanston), so his wife, Carissa Casbon, attended and accepted the Society's Certificate of Excellence for him.
